Archeological Excavations Begin in Deir el-Zor

Deir el-Zor, northeast (SANA) – The Syrian-French joint expedition began excavations at the Halabia and Zalabia site in Deir el-Zor, northeast of the country,  with the participation of 29 experts.

Director of Archeology in Deir el-Zor Yaser Shouhan said excavations for this season focus on the Byzantine houses and the eastern area of the church, in addition to continuing the unearthing of the wall and excavations near the north gate that aim to study the road connecting the north and south gates and determine whether the area was used for guard duty or caravans.

He added that restorations in the church will continue, particularly in dilapidated areas where urgent restorations will be made. The expedition will continue work until August 15th.

The General Department of Archeology and Museums implemented a work plan with the French side to protect archeological sites in the area where the Halabia and Zalabia dam will be built.
