Poettering: Syria is an important country in achieving peace

Damascus, (SANA)-President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering has described Syria as " an important country in the Middle East and it is a main element in the peace process,".

In a televised interview aired Friday, Poettering indicated that he will visit Syria next August to discuss aspects of cooperation between the EU and Syria.

" The EU has been exposed to a wide misleading operation regarding the American war on Iraq ," The European official said, asserting that the EU supports the establishment of an independent Iraq without any foreign intervention.
