DAMASCUS, (SANA)-President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday reiterated Syria's strategic method towards peace, underlining the need for peace to be comprehensive, just and that all rights should be returned back to their owners.
The President received a British parliamentary delegation headed by MP Richard Spring. Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and Chairman of the Syrian-British Association Fawaz al-Akhras attended the meeting.
President al-Assad presented an explanation on the Syrian-Israeli indirect negotiations under Turkish mediation, and the potential role of Europe in supporting those negotiations.
He answered questions raised by members of the delegations on the latest developments in Iraq, Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian lands.
British MPs underlined Syria's main and pivotal role in the region and its importance in finding suitable solutions to different issues.
They called for deepening dialogue between the two sides in order to reach a true understanding to regional issues and help solve its problems.
Mr. Spring described the meeting with President al-Assad as very good, stressing the significance of the delegation's visit to Syria during this time which witnesses positive developments.
"We discussed with President al-Assad a number of issues related to the region and its stability, particularly the indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel through the Turkish mediator and the election of a President in Lebanon," Spring said in a statement to SANA following the meeting.
He referred to the importance of Syrian-Lebanese good relations as they will be reflected on stability in the region, saying 'this is what we were interested in'.
"The important thing is to convey what we have heard from President al-Assad
that Syria plays a constructive role in the issues of the region, realize Lebanese reconciliation and reach the just and comprehensive peace," Mr. Spring added.
He expressed hope his country will play an important role in achieving peace and security in the region, particularly in light of the strong relations connecting between his country and each of the Arab world and the USA.
